A Spare Time Activity (STA) is an activity that can be given to a Cub or Scout to do in their spare time. This could be an activity to do before they start their weekly Cub or Scout meeting, or something to do at home. Traditionally, STA's are given during competitions such as Rayner Trophy or Gordon Shield where the Scout Patrol need to hand in their STA's at a fixed time. It is up to them to decide when to do the task, as long as it is handed in on time.

Examples of Spare Time Activities[edit]

  • Build a mini catapult using dowels, or matches
  • Build a water filter
  • Carve a racing car out of a block of sunlight soap
  • Complete a quiz on Scouting, or current affairs
  • Solve a puzzle or riddle

Tips for completing STA's on competitions[edit]

  1. Make sure to read the instructions very carefully and complete exactly as specified. Points will be awarded for following the specifications.
  2. Be neat and creative.
  3. Consider attaching your STA to a cardboard base for additional sturdiness.
  4. If you are creating a craft, have spare equipment (e.g. sunlight soap bar) in case yours breaks while building.
  5. If you will be using paint or glue, make sure to start early to allow enough time for drying.
  6. Make sure your team number is clearly marked or attached when you hand in.
