Acid rain is caused by air pollution which turns into acid when it combines with water vapour in the atmosphere and falls to the ground as rain. The acid can causes damage to plants, animals (mainly fish) and limestone buildings. The main type of pollution causing acid rain is from burning fossil fuels, especially coal burnt by power stations.
For your Gold Wolf Awareness Challenge, you must find out out about acid rain and demonstrate how it affects our planet. Here are some experiments you can do to show this:
- Watering plants with acidic water - using different concentrations of lemon juice to see the effect of acid rain on plants
- Rocks and Acid Rain - using vinegar to test the effect of acid rain on limestone and other rocks
- How acid affects chalk - similar to the previous experiment
- Burning coal producing acid rain - simulate coal burning power plants by experimenting with charcoal and sulfur to produce acid water.
