Boardsailing Scout Interest Badge

Badge Requirements

Have passed the Swimming Scoutcraft Badge or complete all the requirements for it.
Have a basic understanding of the theory of sailing, with particular reference to the centre of effort and the centre of lateral resistance and explain their significance to boardsailing.
Be able to identify all parts of a sailboard and its rigging.
Rig a sailboard and sail a course of at least 300 metres, at least one beat, one run, and one reach, on both port and starboard tacks.
Discuss the planning of a board sailing excursion with respect to the type of water on which you will be sailing and what precautions you would take.
Describe the international signal for help and explain when to use it.
Demonstrate and explain rigging modifications for varying weather conditions.
Discuss with the examiner the SAS rules and appendices applicable to boardsailing and right-of-way for Sailing vessels
Sailing with an average wind strength of Force 3 on the Beaufort Wind Scale or more, complete a figure-of-eight course twice, sailing continuously. The radius of the circles to be less than 10 metres.
Perform the following manoeuvres:
1. Using up haul rope and with the sail in irons perform a board 360 turn
2. Tack
3. Gybe
4. Stop and gybe

Safe From Harm: Whilst completing the requirements for this badge, Scouts must not be placed in hazardous or dangerous situations under any circumstances. All activities must comply with SCOUTS South Africa Safe from Harm framework and be supervised by responsible adults. Participation should offer meaningful learning or service experiences while ensuring the Scout's safety and well-being at all times.
