Badge Requirements

Dance is a powerful way to express yourself, build confidence, and connect with different cultures and communities. The Dance Scoutcraft Badge gives you the chance to explore a variety of dance styles, learn new movements, and improve your coordination, rhythm, and creativity. Through fun, performance, and teamwork, you'll discover that dance is not just about steps — it's about telling a story, feeling the music, and enjoying the moment. Badge
- Cultural Dance Performance
- Learn and perform a short dance (1–2 minutes) that reflects the cultural or national identity of a group or country.
Examples include: Traditional Zulu dance, Gumboot dancing, Irish dance, or any recognised folk or cultural style. - Explain to the Examiner the origin or significance of the dance you chose.

- Technique Demonstration
- Demonstrate a short routine from a recognised dance style of your choice (e.g. Ballet, Hip Hop, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Latin American, Ballroom, Tribal, etc.). The routine should show your competence in the dance style, demonstrate basic technique, include a combination of fundamental movements or steps, and reflect rhythm and control.
- Explain where the dance style originated and approximately when it began.
- Share the story or purpose behind the style — for example, was it created as a form of rebellion, ritual, celebration, or performance for royalty?
- Feel the beat
- Demonstrate your sense of rhythm by clapping, tapping, or stepping out the beat to a song you have not heard before.
- Perform a short dance or routine of your choice, showing that you can keep time with the music from start to finish.
- Warm-Up Matters
Explain why warming up and stretching are important before dancing, including at least two benefits for safety and performance. Then demonstrate a warm-up routine that you could use before a dance practice or performance. - Freestyle to Music
Perform a short improvised dance (1 - 2 minutes) to a piece of music selected by the Examiner. Your dance should reflect musicality and creative interpretation of the rhythm, mood, and tempo of the music. - Attend or Watch a Performance
Attend a live or recorded dance performance and briefly describe to your Examiner the dance style, key features of the choreography, and your impressions of the performance. - Dance Legends Hall of Fame
Choose a well-known dancer or choreographer (past or present) and discuss the following with your Examiner:- Who they are and their most notable achievements
- How they influenced or changed the world of dance
- A memorable quote or iconic moment that captures their legacy
Recommended Age Range: The Dance Scoutcraft Badge is recommended for Scouts aged 11 to 13 years old. It helps them build confidence in movement, explore different dance styles, and develop basic performance and presentation skills. The badge encourages teamwork, creativity, and cultural awareness, laying a strong foundation for more advanced dance and choreography skills in the Art of Dance Scout Interest Badge.
Badge Examiner Requirement: Training and examination for this badge should be conducted by a suitably qualified individual who has relevant experience or formal training in the specific field of expertise being assessed. The ideal Examiner should be a Scout Group Leader, Troop Scouter, Assistant Troop Scouter, or another adult with experience or interest in dance. Where possible, a local dancer, dance teacher, or someone with knowledge of movement and rhythm may assist in evaluating performance and technique.

Whilst completing the requirements for this badge, Scouts must not be placed in hazardous or dangerous situations under any circumstances.
All activities must comply with SCOUTS South Africa Safe from Harm framework and be supervised by responsible adults.
Participation should offer meaningful learning or service experiences while ensuring the Scout's safety and well-being at all times.
