International Jamborees: 1993 Report USA
1993 - 13th American National Jamboree
4 – 10 August / Participants 34 449 / Countries 48 / South Africans 8
In 1993 South African Scouts were invited to send an official Patrol to attend the USA National Scout Jamboree and to spend some time at the Philmont Scout Ranch.
It has been a regular practice of the Boy Scouts of America to send invitations to foreign Scouts inviting them to attend their various National Jamborees and it is common that these trips include visits to other well-known American Scout Campsites.
Unfortunately, the writer could not find much information about this contingent so what follows is sourced from a single Graaff-Reinet newspaper cutting as two of their Scouts were in attendance.
The tour started off with a sight-seeing trip around New York and they also spent some time in Albuquerque where they stayed at Kirtland Air Force Base, and had a Braai with Troop 307 before traveling by coach to the Philmont Scout Ranch where they went Hiking and Backpacking in the mountains. It was then on to Washington spending six nights home hospitality with American Scouting families. Next was the Jamboree that was was held at Fort A.P. Hill Military Base in West Virginia where "The Jamboree was divided into four regional encampments which consisted of a total of 19 sub-camps. Each sub-camp consisted of approximately 1 300 participants each dispersed among 30 - 40 Troops".
