Kon-Tiki Gauteng

From SCOUTS South Africa Wiki
Boksburg Scouts at Murray Park for Kon-Tiki 1986

Kon-Tiki Gauteng is one of several Kon-Tiki raft building events that take place around South Africa, where Scout Troops build a raft from drums, rope and poles using pioneering. For Gauteng Kon-Tiki, a patrol or team stays on the raft for 24 hours and completes various challenges while other Scouts who assisted in raft construction take part in "fringe" events on shore while the raft is afloat. Cub and Meerkat activities also take place as part of the overall Kon-Tiki event.

The Kon-Tiki competition is named after Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 expedition from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands.

The first Kon-Tiki event in Gauteng Region (then Transvaal Area) was held in 1984 at Donaldson Dam in Westonaria. It became an official Transvaal Area event in 1985 at Murray Park, where it was held annually until 2011, and since 2012 it has been held at Arrowe Park Scouting Centre in Benoni.

During the event, a Beaver Challenge is held for Meerkats (5-6 years) and Cubs (7-11 years) to enable them to be part of the event.

Gauteng also hosts the RoverTiki competition.

Each year an event badge is issued according to each theme for that year's competition.
