Richard started his Scouting career in Johannesburg when he joined the 1st Belgravia, Kensington Pack in 1930 going up to the Scout Troop where he became a King Scout in 1939.

With the outbreak of WW II he joined the Army and saw active service with the ILH (Imperial Light Horse Regiment). After the War he returned to his old Troop and was warranted as Scoutmaster.

In 1954 he became District Commissioner. In 1955 he came to the Cape and became Rover Scout Leader of 1st Bergvliet Crew and later again DC of CW 1/2.

Richard was also a member of the Area Finance Committee as well as Area Treasurer. In later years he joined Alan Shinton at the Heritage Centre.

Awarded the Order of the Silver Protea in 1969 and Bar in 1987. In 1999 Richard received the 70 year Long service bar and the Order of the Silver Springbok.

A great Scout and good friend we will miss his dry sense of humour his great fund of knowledge and sound advice.
