Rover Moot: 2013 Report
Gilwell Florida, Gauteng: National Rover Moot
21 to 24 September
Prometheus Rovers Report
Prometheus Rovers Matthew Hoal, Camden Bland, Inge Neuman and Angela Jocobs (Cupcake) attended the Rover Moot that was hosted at Gilwell Florida. all attended. Different crews attended the Moot including Rovers from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. We partook in various games including ultimate Frisbee and baseball. We even raced some people in a dragon boat race that was taking place on Florida lake. We were split up into different groups each time there was a competition, so that we could mingle and meet all participants.
We had a competition where we had to make up various ideas for super heroes such as their names, super powers, weaknesses, etc. When we were done the
organizers mixed up the ideas and the groups had to create a skit using all the ideas.
Another competition that we did was a cooking competition where they gave us various ingredients and we had to cook whatever we wanted in a Dutch Oven.
On our last night we did a small excursion where we all were split up into groups again and drove all over Johannesburg exploring the city. We ended up at a Spur in Rosebank.
On the last day we were split up one last time into groups to discuss the Rover Advancements and what we would like to change about them. We also discussed the potential about creating a Rover equivalent to the Scouts Bushman's Thong.
Cape Western Rovers Report
The moot was rather 'slow moving', but the aim was to meet, greet and interact with other rovers from around South Africa. From Cape Western (wearing the white and blue scarf in the Group photo) were back row Elizabeth Britz, then centre left to right Ubayd Bapoo and Oriel Jongbloed.
Highlights included a dragon boat race on Florida Lake on the first day and a city wide amazing race of the south of Jo'burg on the second last day.
We also discussed the new Rover program and Challenge Awards. There were some heated debates about whether or not Rovering should be a strict tick list of tasks that need to be upheld to national standards or a lifestyle of choices that match the Rovers current circumstances and the needs of his community.
The rest of the program was mainly sitting in camp and talking to the other Rovers. There were about 6 guys from Zimbabwe that attended Moot as well. What we learnt was that Benoni has the coolest Rovers in Johannesburg.
