Sports Fan Scoutcraft Badge

Sport brings people together, whether you're a player, a supporter, or just curious. The Sports Fan Scoutcraft Badge is designed for those who follow a sport, rather than participate. It lets you explore your favourite sport - where it came from, how it’s played, and who inspires you. As you work through the badge, you'll have the opportunity to share your passion with your Patrol or Troop and maybe even inspire others to become a fan or give your sport a try.

Badge Requirements

Sports Fan

1. The Story of My Favourite Sport
   Choose your favourite sport and research its origin and rules. Present your findings to your Patrol or Troop.
   1. Create and present a short story, timeline, or poster showing how the sport began and how it has evolved over time and share with your Patrol/Troop what you enjoy most about it and how you got interested in it.
   2. Create a short and fun explanation of the basic rules of your chosen sport. Use a simple game, skit, demonstration, or visual aid (e.g. a diagram or video) to help your Patrol/Troop understand how the sport is played. (Aim to make it clear for someone who has never seen the sport before.)
2. How Sports Successes are Measured
   1. Describe to the examiner how athletes succeed in your chosen sport.
   2. Describe the different levels of achievement - whether at a local, national, or international level.
   3. Explain how sports players can grow from a beginner to a champion.
3. Sports Stories That Inspire
   Show knowledge of at least two famous personalities, champions or other experts within your chosen sport. Explain what makes them inspiring to you - was it their determination, background, sportsmanship, or skill?
4. Equipment Needed to Play
   Make a checklist showing the essential equipment, clothing, or tools needed to play your sport. For each item, explain its purpose and why it’s important.
5. Game-Changing Moments
   Research a recent major event in your chosen sport - this could be a championship, world record, or historic match. Describe what happened and why it was significant. Share your findings with the examiner.
6. Keep Up With the Game
   Show how you keep up to date with the latest developments in your chosen sport. Track your engagement for one month by keeping a log or journal of how you follow the sport via news, tournaments, streaming channels, or follow players on social media. Share your log with your examiner and explain how this helps you stay informed and connected with your sport.

Recommended Age Range: The Sports Fan Scoutcraft Badge is recommended for Scouts aged 11 to 13 years old. This badge is ideal for younger Scouts looking to connect their personal interests with Scouting activities before moving on to more physically demanding or skills-based sports badges.

Badge Examiner: Training and examination for this badge must be conducted by a suitably qualified individual who has relevant experience or formal training in the specific field of expertise being assessed.

The ideal Examiner should be someone knowledgeable about a variety of sports — This could include a Group Scout Leader, Troop Scouter, or Assistant Troop Scouter with sports knowledge; a school sports coach or physical education teacher; a sports club official; or a community sports organiser with broad sports experience.

Safe From Harm: Whilst completing the requirements for this badge, Scouts must not be placed in hazardous or dangerous situations under any circumstances. All activities must comply with SCOUTS South Africa Safe from Harm framework and be supervised by responsible adults. Participation should offer meaningful learning or service experiences while ensuring the Scout's safety and well-being at all times.
