Swinging Derrick

From SCOUTS South Africa Wiki

A derrick is a lifting device composed at minimum of one guyed mast, which may be articulated over a load by adjusting its guys.

The Derrick post is lashed to the face of a pair of wide spreading shear legs which are supported by a second pair bracing backwards. The jib unit is fitted snugly around the derrick post from which it is slung on a loose rope enabling it to be raised and lowered or turned freely through an arc of 180.

Note that the back leg should be at least twice as long as the jib to maintain balance or a manual load or pickets attached the rear end for support.
