Yay for Making a Fire Safely
The Cubs all shout "Yay" or "Boo" after each sentence of the story.
It was a sunny day so we decided to make a braai ... Yay!
The sign at the picnic spot said "High Fire Danger" ... Boo!
But we read the fire safety rules and we saw that fires are allowed in the official fireplaces. ... Yay!
We didn't like the fireplaces so we decided to make our own fire on the ground. ... Boo!
There were taps nearby and we filled some buckets of water. ... Yay!
It was such a pretty fireplace in the long dry grass with the tree branches overhead! ... Boo!
We cleared the area around the fire to make sure nothing would catch alight, ... Yay!
We broke some branches off the tree to make our fire ... Boo!
We collected some small twigs and leaves to help start the fire. ... Yay!
We also used lots of petrol! ... Boo!
We kept a safe distance from the fire while it was burning. ... Yay!
We put a big pile of spare firewood right next to the fire. ... Boo!
But we decided to move it further away so it wouldn't catch alight. ... Yay!
It became really windy! ... Boo!
But the spot we chose was nice and sheltered from the wind. ... Yay!
We left the fire to go for a swim! ... Boo!
But one of us stayed behind to watch the fire. ... Yay!
She burnt her hand touching a coal from the fire. ... Boo!
She quickly put her hand straight into the bucket of water. ... Yay!
It was time to go home so we had to leave the fire behind. ... Boo!
We put it out with water. ... Yay!
The flames were out but the coals were still hot and smouldering. ... Boo!
We put on more water until the coals were cool. ... Yay!
