Silver Wolf Outdoor Challenge: Go on a nature ramble with your Pack. Listen to and identify sounds. Look for and identify, if possible, some interesting natural objects.

We all live in different places, so nature rambles can mean different things to Cubs in different parts of our country, but whether they mean getting out into the veld, going to a dam, stream, local park or beach, the purpose is to enjoy nature.

All of us are curious about the word around us and love to explore, and a nature ramble is a good way to find out something new. Always remember the Cub Outdoor Code and follow Akela's instructions. Do not go off on your own - use the buddy system. You might like to take a notebook handy for listing any interesting things you see or hear.

Listen to and identify sounds

Firstly, sit down somewhere comfortable, perhaps under a tree, shut your eyes and listen. Take your time. What do you hear? The wind rustling through the trees? A cricket? A bird calling? A bee buzzing? Traffic in the distance? Write down a list of the sounds you hear.

Look for some interesting natural objects

Maybe you can get closer to a calling bird and see what kind it is. Draw the shape in your notebook, and write down its colours.

Now look for some things that interest YOU. We all like different things, so what you find interesting may not be the same for other Cubs. Look for natural things like leaves, seeds, berries, stones, feathers and so on.
