Several scouting skills are used in the simple flagpole race.

  • Knotting and lashing skills,
  • Teamwork and communication,
  • Ability to improvise.

Aim

Each patrol must fly their patrol flag from a 4 metre Camp flagpole using the following materials:

  • 4 Scout Staves
  • 6 x 2 metre lashing ropes
  • 3 x 4 metre guylines
  • 3 x Tent pegs
  • 1 mallet


Game

On signal, each patrol must build a flagpole and fly their patrol flag:

They must

  • Join staves together with round lashings to get the height,
  • Attaching the 3 guylines about 3/4 the way up the flag pole with rolling hitches
  • Hammer in the three tent pegs to form an equilateral triangle
  • Tie the guylines to the pegs with taut-line hitches
  • Adjust the tension on the guylines to hold the flagpole in a vertical position.
  • Form-up and report in!
