John Appleton

Mr John 'Appie' Appleton was a very special person. He enjoyed a full and rewarding life. Jack, as he was known to many, was a real gentleman, courteous, a true Scout, Sportsman, a competent administrator and a friend to all. He was a person who, besides being supportive of his family, made a success of his life and lived to help and advise others. His interests were varied and included inter alia;

Boy Scouts

A Founder member of the 2nd Green & Sea Point Group. He was Group Scoutmaster 1937 to 1982 and together with another friend who was dedicated to Scouting, namely Fatty Rutter, formed a wonderful team who greatly influenced the lives of many young lads.

'Appie' attended the first World Scout Jamboree in 1920 and was awarded the Long Service Medal for 70 year's service.

He served for many years as a member on the Cape Western Area's Finance Committee, and being a Chartered Accountant (SA) and successful businessman, made a valuable contribution in formulating the finance policies of the Area. His distinguished services to Scouting were recognised when in 1987 he was awarded the Order of the Silver Springbok, South African Scouting's highest Award.

Sportsman

He was a member of the Hamiltons Rugby Club for over 75 years and served as their President, Chairman and was eventually made a Life Member and Honorary Club Patron. He also served in a senior capacity in the affairs of the Western Provincial Rugby Football Union and served as Chairman for many years on their Finance Committee, as well as the Finance Committee of the South African Rugby Board.

Fresnaye Sports Club

As a Founder Member, Life Member he contributed to the Welfare of the Fresnaye Sports Club. He served as President of the Tennis section and played his last game at the age of 85 years.

During his eventful life he also served as Chairman of Clubs, Fundraising and numerous Committees. To his wife Elaine, whom he married in 1934, his sons Colin, and Ian and family, we offer our sincere condolences.
