KZN Raft Race

The KZN Raft Race is a Scout event in KwaZulu-Natal region. It is one of a number of raft building and Kon-Tiki events held by Scouts in South Africa. The event was originally a District event called the Highway District Raft Race or the Midmar Raft Race. Later Kevin McQueen was instrumental in opening this event up to the KZN Region.

Date Venue Description
1 March 2026 Baynesfield Dam The 2026 Raft Enduro Race was held at Baynesfield Dam on 1 March, the first event held since 2020. Over 120 participants took part, building 17 rafts which spent 4 hours on the water. The event focused on the 2026 National Challenge theme of Water Safety and was won by 1st Umbogintwini Scouts.[1][2]

24-26 February 2017 Midmar Dam The Midmar Raft Race 2017 was organised and hosted by the Highway District over the BP Sunday weekend. About 720 people braved both hot and cold weather to camp for the weekend, and 103 rafts took part.[3]

2016 Midmar Dam The 2016 Raft Enduro Race was held at Midmar Dam on B-P Sunday, 21 February, with 680 participants from 30 groups taking part.[4][5][6]

2014 Midmar Dam The annual KZN Scout Raft Race was combined with BP Sunday, with over 1 000 people attending on the Sunday. Most Scouts arrived on Friday afternoon and set up camp, spending much of Saturday working on their raft. Races took place on Sunday after the BP Sunday commemoration.[8]
2013 Midmar Dam Over 1500 people were involved in this annual event, held along with the BP Sunday event at Midmar Dam.[9]
2012 Midmar Dam This was the 19th running of the Midmar Scout Raft Race with a record entry of over 50 scout-constructed rafts from 16 scout groups around KwaZulu-Natal who competed against each other in various categories. Close on 800 scouts, cubs and parents packed into the Orient Park campsite at Midmar Dam to take part in the event, organised by 1st New Germany Scout Group.[10]
