Getting the cubs to make their own play dough (no cooking recipe) is an easy and fun way to start an activity.

The Cubs love to squish, squelch the dough in their hands as they make the dough, and get a little messy along the way. The best is the dough washes out of uniforms easily so no real need for aprons and other fuss as with poster paints.

Recipe

Ingredients Equipment (for each six) Comments
* 4 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • Food colour may be added .. at your own peril!
* 5 litre bucket (to mix in),
  • plastic cup (to measure),
  • tables to work on.. Can work on the floor too!
Some recipes call for cooking oil, tartaric acid, heating - this adds complexity and costs that are not necessary in the case of a single use play dough.

Make the play dough

Making the dough is a fun activity and best done in the sixes! This doubles up as an activity and saves on the preparation time.

  • Sixer collects the bucket from the Assistant Pack Scouter (APS).
  • Seconder collects the plastic cup/mug from the APS.
  • 1st helper moves from six to six with a bag off flour - the cubs measure out the 4 cups of flour into the bucket.
  • 2nd helper goes around to the sixes with the salt - the cubs add the 1 cup of salt to the bucket, and mix the ingredients.
  • 3rd helper goes around with a bucket of water - the cubs add 1 cup of water to the mix.
  • Cubs begin mixing the dough.
  • Initially the dough is very sticky and sticks to the hands and fingers,
  • but as the dough hydrates and is worked (kneaded) it becomes less sticky. (add more flour if needed)

Activities with Play Dough

One of the adult leaders leads the activity calling out instructions, others help by supervising and giving advice to the cubs.

Sculpting with play dough

  • Akela calls out a object, and the cubs must make it.
  • Examples: Ball, Cube, Pyramid, Snail, Snake, Mushroom, Car, Pizza, Cub, Wolf.
  • Once everyone has made their sculpture, they show it to the APS,
  • They can then squish the dough and wait for the next object to make.

Knotting with play dough

  • Cubs make a thin "sausages" with the play dough.
  • Akela calls out a knot - and the cubs must use the play dough "sausages"
  • Cubs call the APS to show they have done the knot correctly - if not, they start again.
