The Troop Leader (TL) is a senior Scout appointed by the Troop Scouter (TS), in consultation with the Court of Honour (CoH). They are responsible for assisting the Scouters, particularly with the coordination of all the Patrols in the Troop under direction of the TS. A Troop may only have one TL, and may also appoint an Assistant Troop Leader, another senior Scout who assists the TL with a specific job within the Troop.
To be considered as a candidate, a potential TL shall have the following:
- An ability to lead;
- First Class Advancement Level Badge;
- General knowledge of the current SSA Scout Literature.
Jobs of a TL
The jobs and responsibilities of a TL may differ from troop to troop, so it is important to discuss what these will be when the TL is appointed. Typically these may include:
- Being the Chairperson of the Court of Honour, although this is not mandatory.
- Assisting in the training of the Patrol Leaders.
- Guide patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders in the planning of their patrol and advancement activities.
- Assist patrol leaders and patrols in their advancement planning and marking off advancement items.
- Assist the troop in achieving Scoutcraft and Interest badges, including running activities for badge progression as well as advising troop members on badge courses to sign up for.
- Planning or assisting in the planning of troop activities such as camps, hikes and outings in consultation with the TS.
- Maintaining the discipline of the troop along with the CoH. This may include the troop falling in to the TL for parade, as well as coordinating uniform inspections.
