Western Cape Jamborees: 1967 Report
Goodwood: Friendship Camp
A combined Voortrekker and Scout "friendship" camp was held over the week end of 5th and 6th of August 1967.
The opening ceremony of the Friendship Camp was conducted by SA Navy Commodore H Bierman and very soon after the official opening, the rain was pouring down. The Camp Chief "Rocky" Irving looked somewhat depressed, and glanced at the skies and to his H.Q. Staff.
These were probably the thoughts of the Camp Chief and staff – "a fine turn-out of over 200 Scouts and Voortrekkers who had come prepared, despite the weather, to make this a fine camp; we were justly proud of each one of you".
In true Scouting tradition the weather did not dampen their spirits and the programme continued as planned.
The closing message from the Camp Chief was: -
It is with great pride that I have met you all in this Friendship Camp. The weather has been against us, but none-the-less, your spirit is great.
I hope the friendships made with your brothers, the Voortrekkers, will be a strong one – we are indeed delighted to have you in our Camp.
I give you one thought - together, united in friendship, we can, indeed, make our country great. You who are the future leaders of South Africa, I salute you.
Now, remember your 4th Scout Law "Friendship". Extend your left hand, get to know a companion, and leave camp with very happy memories.
Scout World Jamboree-on-the-Air
The annual Scout World Jamboree-on-the-Air was held over the same week, and a Radio Station was set up in the Gilcape Rover Den.
The idea was to pass on greetings from local Scout Troops to others situated elsewhere on the globe. This station was a great success as far as contacts outside South Africa were concerned. For example, stations such in Ghana, Germany, Singapore, Mafeking, Botswana, Tokyo, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia and on Gough Island, who had three of their local Scouts in the operating room.
Radio representative Rod reporting from Benguela, Angola, sent greetings on behalf of 39 Scouts and Guides in his shack, and hoped that we are enjoying our camp here and best of luck for the future.
Our Scouts send their Greetings and Best Wishes.
