Western Cape Join in Jamborees, Jamborallies and Country Rallies

The first Scout Jamboree was held in England in 1920 and was attended by Scouts from 34 countries. The Western Cape held their first Jamboree in 1921 and the first South African National Jamboree took place in East London in 1936.

The timeline below includes some regional jamborees where there was a Western Cape presence.

Jamboree – 24 May (Empire Day)
Quote: At various parts of the ground two Scout brass bands belonging to 1st Observatory and Nazareth House Troops respectively discoursed sweet music, and their bandmasters are to be congratulated on the proficiency to which they have brought these young performers.

Districts represented various countries.

In 1971 the idea of a "Join-in-Jamboree" developed by South African Vic Clapham was promoted and accepted internationally during Nordjamb '75. Report

1975 Gilcape

Join in Jamboree – 4 to 5 October
Cubs joined in on the Sunday and had their Cub Fun Day CW9 held an international cooking competition at Kenilworth Centre
CW12 held a two day Join-in-Jamboree at Gilcape

Scout-a-Rama – 15 October
Hosted by CW9 to promote Scouting in the Area.
750 Scouts and Girl Guides in attendance.
Static displays, Ox-braai, military band and food pavilions

Join in Jamboree 'Scout Bonanza' – 29 to 30 September
The Join-in-Jamboree symbol represented the waves of friendship that rise from international gatherings of Scouts and flow around the world spreading the spirit of the Scout brotherhood.
Cubs joined in on the Sunday.

Included the Quinn Trophy
Attracted a good crowd of Scouts and onlookers.

The opening ceremony at 14:00 on Saturday was most impressive, with marching into the arena and the lighting of the friendship flame.

Attended by 1436+, included free rides and lunch, Cubs 90 years.
The following competitions were also held:-

  • Cub Edward Shield won by 2nd Somerset West
  • Scout Quinn won by 1st Bergvliet
  • Cross Country won by 1st Durbanville

A fun filled day for over 1000 Cubs, Scouts and Rovers.
Also SA Scouting's Centenary as well a 2007 UK Jamboree Re-union.
