Western Cape Jamborees: 1971 Goodwood Report
Goodwood: Republic Festival Jamborally
As part of the Festival to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Republic, a National Scout Jamborally was held at the Goodwood Showgrounds from the 22nd to the 31st May. Organised and run by the Cape Western Province Division, the Jamborally was attended by contingents from all over South Africa.
The Scouts were billeted at the Epping Primary School with meals provided by the Festival cafeteria.
Together with other Youth Organisations, the Scouts carried out various duties at the Festival site as well as assisting the Girl Guides in manning the Guide/Scout pavilion. Those at the Jamborally were helped in the performance of their duties by local Scouts who attended on a daily basis.
Scouts and Guides took part in the Youth Pageant on Thursday, 27th May, which culminated in a "For Understanding" tableau. In addition to viewing the various exhibitions and displays, various excursions were arranged including visits to the mailship in Cape Town Harbour, to the naval base at Simonstown, and an ascent of Table Mountain to attend a Scouts' Own Service at Maclear's Beacon.
As part of the Festival celebrations, a party drawn from the various Youth Organisations undertook a Goodwill Tour by mailship up the coast to Durban. Scoutmaster Peter Barnard and Scouts Frans Verfuss and Leon Techman represented the Movement. Messages of goodwill and emblems from the Festival were ceremoniously presented to the Mayors at Port Elizabeth, East London, and Durban.
The Movement's participation in this National event was an important public relations effort. The members of the Contingent, and those local Scouts who helped, not only cheerfully performed a Good Turn to the public and the Festival Organisers, but they also did a Good Turn to the Movement as well. Mr. Scott, his assistants, and the boys deserve our thanks for their activities.
Organiser: R. Scott.
