Gilcape: Join-in-Jamboree

The weekend past (10/11 October) was probably one of the most successful weekend activities held for many years in our Area.

Opening Ceremony

Seventy-eight Troops, ten Guide Companies and our 'Jambats' for the World Jamboree made up the camp of some 1 700. An additional 1 000 visitors came along on Sunday to enjoy the activities with their Cubs, Scouts and Guides.

Each Sub-Camp represented another Scouting country, with many striking camp gateways identifying the countries concerned

Troops, Guide Companies and Districts went to much trouble to make the event a 'Jamboree Weekend' – badges and pennants were printed, scarves and hats were made, international dinners were cooked on the Saturday evening and guests invited using formal printed invitations.

Friendship Game

The exciting programme included:

  • Friendship games and tea parties.
  • International dinners in Troop camp sites.
  • Raft building.
  • Tent pitching contest.
  • Chariot racing.
  • Cross-country running.
  • International pavilions selling lunches.
  • A rock concert.

The Sunday saw international food stalls spring up to serve mouth watering dishes, served with a smile. The arena events and Quinn Trophy competitions proved enjoyable and entertaining.

Arena Events Included:

  • Parachute drop.
  • Drum majorettes.
  • Band display.

Thank you all for rising to the occasion and making the weekend a most enjoyable one for our Scouts/Guides.

Thanks to our small committee, HQ for much last minute printing and arrangements and all Troop Scouters who went out of their way to make the weekend enjoyable.
