Wood Badge Holders

Wood Badge is the highest achievement award for adult leaders in SCOUTS South Africa, including Scouters, registered Rovers, and individuals holding designated or honorary ranks who complete their respective courses of training. The badge symbolizes a Scouter's advanced training completion and membership in Scouting's elite group of leaders.

History

The first Wood Badge course was conducted by Robert Baden-Powell at Gilwell Park in September 1919. In South Africa, the initial Wood Badge training began with a Cub course in January 1926. Despite financial constraints faced by the Cape Province Headquarters, the course was self-supporting and took place at St John's Hostel in Cape Town. Subsequently, the first Scout course occurred in the grounds of the 1st Claremont Troop, and the second Cub course was held at Bamboo Vlei, Ottery.

Significance and Regalia

The Wood Badge consists of two wooden beads from a necklace originally belonging to King Dinizulu. Additional beads are awarded to those who advance further in training roles: one extra bead for Assistant Adult Leader Trainers and two extra beads for Leader Trainers. These beads are worn on a leather bootlace around the neck when in uniform. Completion of the Wood Badge grants life membership to the 1st Gilwell Park Scout Group and the rights to wear distinctive regalia including:

  • The 'Gilwell Grey' scarf, coloured dove grey on the outside and warm red on the inside.
  • A patch of the Maclaren tartan at the apex of the Gilwell scarf.
  • A special leather Wood Badge Woggle.

Usage

The Gilwell scarf is permitted for wear by any Scouter who has completed the relevant training and been awarded their Wood Badge. It is specifically worn at SSA Training activities and Gilwell Reunions by warranted National Training Team members or Wood Badge holders. This scarf and the accompanying regalia signify a Scouter's commitment to the highest standards of Scouting leadership and their role in fostering the development of youth within the Scouting movement.

The beads should always be worn when the scouter is in uniform.
