Art of Dance Scout Interest Badge
Dance is a powerful way to express yourself, build confidence, and connect with people. The Art of Dance Scout Interest Badge takes your passion for movement to the next level, building on the skills learned in the Dance Scoutcraft Badge. You'll refine your technique, explore more complex choreography, and develop your own unique style. Along the way, you'll share your love of dance with others, learn leadership by teaching or leading performances, and discover the cultural stories behind different styles. Through fun, performance, and teamwork, you'll see that dance is not just about steps — it's about telling a story, feeling the music, and enjoying the moment.
Badge Requirements

- Prerequisite Knowledge and Training
Have completed the Dance Scoutcraft Badge and be prepared to demonstrate any of the skills learned.
OR
Complete all requirements of the Dance Scoutcraft Badge as part of this badge. - Dedication to Dance
- Show that you have been actively participating in your chosen dance style for at least 12 months.
- Discuss with your examiner how your skills, technique, and confidence have improved over that time, giving specific examples.
- Know the Moves
Define and correctly demonstrate five basic dance terms or movements appropriate to your skill level/grade and relevant to your dance style (e.g. Plié, Jazz Square, Cuban Motion, Body Wave, Box Step, Stomp).
Ensure you can explain what each move is used for and how it contributes to a performance. - Dress the Part
Explain to your Examiner the dance gear, clothing, shoes, or props used in your style of dance and how to care for these items properly. - Choreograph and Lead
- Choreograph and teach a simple dance routine (minimum 1 minute) to at least four Scouts from your Patrol or Troop. The routine should be suitable for beginners and showcase your ability to lead, teach, and communicate clearly.
- Demonstrate the routine to your Examiner — either in person or by sharing a video of the group performing the dance.
If possible, perform the dance for your Troop as part of the presentation in requirement 6.
- Share Your Passion
Give a 5–10 minute presentation to your Troop on the benefits of dance, your personal experiences, and what you enjoy most about it. Include photos, short video clips, or live demonstrations if possible. - Performance Planning
Discuss the following with your examiner:- How to choose costumes, accessories, and makeup for a performance.
- Different performance spaces (stage, outdoor, community hall, etc.) and how they affect the audience experience.
- Ways to make performances engaging and memorable, such as storytelling, facial expression, and stage presence.
- Showtime!
Complete ONE of the following:- Perform at least twice in front of a live audience.
- Perform two different dances for your Patrol or Troop.
- Plan and host a small talent or dance show for your Patrol or Troop, performing at least one dance yourself.
Recommended Age Range: The Art of Dance Scout Interest Badge is recommended for Scouts aged 14 years and older. Scouts at this level have the maturity, discipline, and creative capacity to refine their technique, explore choreography in greater depth, and perform with confidence. The badge builds on the foundational skills learned in the Dance Scoutcraft Badge and challenges Scouts to demonstrate originality, cultural understanding, and leadership in dance.
Badge Examiner: Training and examination for this badge must be conducted by a suitably qualified individual who has relevant experience or formal training in the specific field of expertise being assessed. The ideal Examiner should be an experienced dancer, dance teacher, or choreographer with knowledge of a variety of dance styles and performance techniques.

Safe From Harm: Whilst completing the requirements for this badge, Scouts must not be placed in hazardous or dangerous situations under any circumstances. All activities must comply with SCOUTS South Africa Safe from Harm framework and be supervised by responsible adults. Participation should offer meaningful learning or service experiences while ensuring the Scout's safety and well-being at all times.
