Gilwell is the official Training Centre for the Gauteng Region. Since 1922 Scout Leaders and Scouts have been trained here and enjoyed good fun and comradeship over the weekends, as Scouts and Scouters will continue to do in the future.
Training courses that run here include:
- Weston Patrol Leader Training Unit (Pretoria)
- Gilten Patrol Leader Training Unit (Johannesburg)
- Patrol Leader Training Course (PLTC)
Facilities at Gilwell
- Camping Area - 10-15 patrols could set up complete camps.
- Main Parade Ground
- Covered Areas There are three roofed shelters around the Main Parade Ground.
- Chapel - Used for Scout's Own.
- Campfire Circle
- Main Building with:
- Group/Conference Room for up to 50 people.
- Kitchen - with stoves, microwave oven, fridges and four tables.
- Ablutions Male and female with showers.
- Upstairs Bedrooms (for use by adults only) Six small rooms with basic furniture.
Rates for Scouts
- Day visitors - R40 per person
- Camping fee - R60 Per person / night
Community Service Ideas
If you are you looking for a community service project - Gilwell has an opportunities for you to take on a project to help the Scouting Family We are looking for a hardworking and enthusiastic scouts or patrols to take on these projects.
There are large projects for a Springbok candidate or a Rover to:
- Level the driveway and pave it with paving stones (already donated to Gilwell).
Smaller projects could include
- Repair of:
- Wooden fence
- Firewood shelter
- Campfire circle slasto seating
- Chapel fencing
- Chapel gateway thatching / replace thatching with lattice structure
- Promise & Law gateway thatching / replace thatching with lattice structure
- Tiger Hills thatching
- Seating in Mowgli's Cave and Akela's Den
- Boundary wall barb wire
- Pole store roller gate
- Treat Skip's Den and Akela's Den woodwork
- Paint the boundary fence
- Rebuild the shed
- Remove invasive plants
- Treat campfire circle wooden seating
- Varnish Tiger Hills woodwork
