Norman Osburn

Norman joined the 2nd Kenilworth Pack as an eight year old Cub and upon turning eleven he was invested as a Scout during the Troop's second annual troop camp in December 1955. He was a keen Scout becoming a Second in 1958, a Patrol Leader a year later and their Troop Leader in 1960.

Norman got his Queen's Scout in 1959 and later, proving his practical skills and leadership ability, he was the leader of winning teams in various district and divisional competitions. These included Withinshaw Trophy, Croswell Trophy, the Cape Times First Aid Trophy and the prestigious Gordon's Shield in 1961. He was one of four Scouts representing the troop at the May 1960 Festival Jamboree in Bloemfontein and had attended every annual troop camp.

On attaining the age of eighteen he became a warranted Assistant Scoutmaster and did a great job running the troop when the Scoutmaster 'Reg' and Assistant 'Itch' had resigned.

For four years he was Scoutmaster of the 1st Blairgowrie, in the Transvaal, where he gained his Wood Badge.

Returning to Cape Town in 1969, he was successively District Scouter, A.D.C. and D.C. of CW 3. In 1975 Colin Inglis, then Divisional Commissioner, appointed Norman as his Deputy. Subsequently he was Deputy to Area Commissioners Kudu Quinn and Garnet de la Hunt giving loyal support that anyone could have asked of him. He was appointed Area Commissioner in 1985.

A lawyer by profession, Norman is a partner in a prominent legal firm in Cape Town and was a Cape Town City Councillor, serving on and as Chairman of various committees he is known to have the courage of his convictions and to say publicly what he believes to be right.

Norman married Ina Ackermann, a university lecturer in Law and they have two sons, Justin and Luke.
