Badge Requirements

- Have passed the Aviation Skills Scoutcraft Badge, or complete parts 1, 2 & 6 of its requirements.
- Demonstrate aircraft marshalling signals by day and by night.
- State, after visiting an airport, the objectives and functions of the air traffic services (i.e. Air Traffic Controller, the tower, approach, information, fire brigade and any other services).
- Explain the use of equipment used by minor airfield control towers.
- Recite the phonetic alphabet.
- Describe the types of separations used in Air Traffic Control.
- Identify three local beacons by their Morse signals and radio frequency.
- Demonstrate, with the examiner acting as the pilot, an air traffic-controlled circuit pattern from start-up to shut-down.
- Draw a runway and its circuit patterns, indicating:
- Climb-out; cross wind; downwind; base leg; final leg.
- Runway markings by night and by day.
- Likely windsock position and landing direction relative to wind direction.
- Taxiways; over-shoot; under-shoot areas.
- Explain the importance of aircraft adhering to flight levels and how these are calculated and obtained.
- Explain the aircraft priority order for landing at an airfield and the rules governing right-of-way.
- Know the radio readability scale.
- Know the international calls for distress and emergency.
- Explain the difference between QDM and QDR.
- State what type of "flight rules" are available to pilots.

Whilst completing the requirements for this badge, Scouts must not be placed in hazardous or dangerous situations under any circumstances.
All activities must comply with SCOUTS South Africa Safe from Harm framework and be supervised by responsible adults.
Participation should offer meaningful learning or service experiences while ensuring the Scout's safety and well-being at all times.
